Tomorrow, for the first time in 5 1/2 months, I am going to drive! And on the left side!
We're renting a car in the afternoon and driving up to the Lake District for the long Bank Holiday weekend. We'll be staying in a town called Windermere. It's about a 4-5 hour drive... but we're looking forward to it. http://www.golakes.co.uk
I just overheard a new word of the day...
a colleague was describing a girl he just met as "fit"
It does not mean she hits the gym regularly; it means she is a "fine specimen".

Have you thought about the route?
I recommend M40 to Birmingham and then pick up the M6(toll) to get around Birmingham.
Avoid the M1 and the traditional M6 through Birmingham. The toll road is far better.
Once you get off the M6 toll you will hit traffic pretty much all the way to Lancaster but especially when you are going through the gap between Manchester & Liverpool. However, try to avoid driving it between 4pm and 8pm.
I can recommend stopping for an early dinner in Knutsford (just off the M6 south of Manchester). Its a lovely town and a great way to avoid traffic.
Driving on the left on the motorway is a breeze. The barriers stop you driving on the wrong side. It will be a bit trickier on the ordinary roads. Be especially careful at T-Junctions and roundabouts.
You will like the Lake District although Windermere is a bit touristy. Take your hiking boots and enjoy the countryside.
Thanks Charles - I've heard your recommendations re the M6 from several people...
I'll remember to "Think Left"
Has your word of the day been "smart" yet, as in, "You look smart?"

Under most conditions driving on the left is a breeze. The problem is when you have to just react without thinking. Then brain is thinkng right side of the road and that's not always a good thing.

Driving on the left is one thing but the driving the Hardnott Pass is another! ...................and no t shirt to show for it either.
Rino .... sorry I missed your call. Hope your weekend went well and you both enjoyed it.
Jim!
Thanks for you post... We made it back without a hitch.... just a bit of traffic exactly where you said.
Beth's already thinking of a T-shirt design idea!
We enjoyed our stay with you very much.. We will be posting some pictures and a link to your B&B shortly.
